A Beginner\u2019s Guide to Tech\u2019s Latest Obsession"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A couple months ago, friends and business contacts started asking me for a crash course on my professional research studying virtual environments. Their interest reflects an explosion\u2014which you\u2019ve probably noticed\u2014of noise and hype surrounding something called the \u201cmetaverse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article is an introduction for a complete or almost beginner. There\u2019s plenty of mainstream coverage on the topic, but it often conflates concepts: virtual reality is not the metaverse (though it\u2019s related), and crypto\/Web3 by itself is not the metaverse (though also related). Confusing, I know. Whether you\u2019re a businessperson or bystander, this is my best effort to lay everything out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is the Metaverse?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 99.99% of cases, provided the term is used correctly, you could replace the word \u201cmetaverse\u201d with \u201cinternet\u201d and the sentence will mean the same thing. So why is everyone using this fancy new word? I think analyst&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dusanwriter\">Doug Thompson<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/spatialreality.io\/doug-thompson-a-beginners-guide-to-the-metaverse-and-why-it-matters-to-enterprise\/\">said it very well<\/a>&nbsp;when he noted that \u201cwe\u2019re using the term as a proxy for a sense that everything is about to change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if the metaverse is just the internet\u2014what about the internet is about to change? To answer that question, I\u2019ve broken this article into four parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Spatial Computing&nbsp;<\/strong>(What is that?)<\/li><li><strong>Game Engines&nbsp;<\/strong>(What are those?)<\/li><li><strong>Virtual Environments&nbsp;<\/strong>(Is that the metaverse? \u2026<em>sort of<\/em>)<\/li><li><strong>Virtual Economies&nbsp;<\/strong>(Please don\u2019t tell me I have to learn about NFTs\u2026<em>you might<\/em>)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For those that want my definition of the metaverse up front, I\u2019d say:&nbsp;<strong>The metaverse is the internet, but it\u2019s also a spatial (and often 3D), game-engine-driven collection of virtual environments.&nbsp;<\/strong>There is a lot missing from this definition (like avatars), but if you\u2019re like many people, that will already sound like a made-up buzzword salad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Spatial Computing (and the History of the Interface)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand the changes coming to life online, you have to start with the seemingly obvious way we currently access the internet: computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And to understand where we\u2019re headed, you have to look at the history of computer interfaces. But the real mainstream moment for computers was the invention of the graphical user interface (GUI). This is when working with computers came to involve clicking pictures and is what most of us take for granted as \u201cjust how they work today.\u201d GUIs are now used in everything from ATMs to ticketing machines, and they\u2019re the reason ordinary, non-programmer people like us can use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why go through this history?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point is that at every stage in the development just described, working with computers became easier, more accessible, and more people could use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clay Bavor, at Google,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/perspectives\/clay-bavor\/virtual-and-augmented-realities-asking-right-questions-and-traveling-path-ahead\/\">whose description<\/a>&nbsp;of this history and insights I am borrowing here, puts it this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver the past several decades, every time people made computers work more like we do\u2014every time we removed a layer of abstraction between us and them\u2014computers became more broadly accessible, useful, and valuable to us. We, in turn, became more capable and productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2017\/05\/21\/the-next-great-computer-interface-is-emerging-but-it-doesnt-have-a-name-yet\/\">the next great computing interface is emerging\u2014it just doesn\u2019t have a good name yet<\/a>. You may have heard about concepts like augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, immersive computing, or whatever two-letter acronym.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/r382y8wm7k\">pic.twitter.com\/r382y8wm7k<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Hrafn Thorisson (@hrafntho) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hrafntho\/status\/1442601566972772356?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 27, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What all of these concepts share is that they involve the use of three-dimensional space. That is a very big deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My colleague at Singularity University, interface designer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nothelga\">Jody Medich<\/a>, taught me just&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2015\/08\/04\/3d-computer-interfaces-will-amaze-like-going-from-dos-to-windows\/\">how important 3D space is for the human brain<\/a>. Which makes sense. We are born into 3D space. We grow up living in 3D space. It would make sense that our brains and bodies are built to interact in 3D space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So this term \u201cspatial computing\u201d is becoming a commonly used way to refer to these interfaces. Be careful not to conflate this with the metaverse, since many spatial computing people don\u2019t consider themselves to be involved with, or a part of, all this metaverse nonsense. But it is related, and we\u2019ll come to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src='https:\/\/gfycat.com\/ifr\/EcstaticLimitedChinesecrocodilelizard' frameborder='0' scrolling='no' allowfullscreen width='640' height='404'><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>One other way to think of this is to consider why we don\u2019t typically see grandparents playing video game consoles. It takes time to develop the motor skills to smash buttons on a controller in the right way. Similarly, we take for granted that at some point we had to learn the motor skills to type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do, however,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=grandparents+nintendo+wii&amp;tbm=isch&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiI67THkpj1AhVSqnIEHaa6Cr8Q2-cCegQIABAA&amp;oq=grandparents+nintendo+wii&amp;gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzIHCCMQ7wMQJzIHCCMQ7wMQJ1AAWABg9x5oAHAAeACAAbsBiAG7AZIBAzAuMZgBAKoBC2d3cy13aXotaW1nwAEB&amp;sclient=img&amp;ei=40PUYcjtOtLUytMPpvWq-As&amp;bih=631&amp;biw=1428&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS895US895&amp;hl=en\">see more grandparents<\/a>&nbsp;playing systems like the Nintendo Wii. You pick up a controller and swing your arms. Intuitive, easy, and anyone can do it. That\u2019s a spatial interface. The big deal is that more people, including many more grandparents, could become comfortable using computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, you should also think of spatial things as having the properties of&nbsp;<em>moving around in space<\/em>. In this sense, though not controlled using a spatial interface, a traditional video game like Fortnite is spatial (you move around), whereas a Zoom call is not. I don\u2019t want to complicate things, but spatial&nbsp;<em>audio<\/em>is another thing too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To explain why this matters,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2017\/05\/08\/cybersecurity-pros-will-soon-patrol-computer-networks-like-agents-in-the-matrix\/\">I often use the example<\/a>\u00a0of Protectwise (now a Verizon company). They build tools to help cybersecurity professionals detect threats to their computer systems. Typically, a cybersecurity person lives life inside dashboards looking at log files to sense what\u2019s happening. What if that data could be turned into a spatial environment? Now patrolling your company\u2019s computer system is like playing a video game. More people could do that since it\u2019s more intuitive. Game Engines: Construction Tools to Build the Metaverse<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Game engines may be one of the most consequential technologies of the next decade. I know that might sound a little crazy. But hear me out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A game engine is the software tool developers use to build (and run) video games. In these software programs you can upload 3D objects, apply rules for how those objects can move, add sounds, etc. The Protectwise thing shown above was made using the Unity game engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In business, the term \u201cvideo game\u201d is also misleading, since it suggests something recreational or non-serious. But as the world becomes more digital, game engines are powering the computing interfaces for all sorts of industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aaron Lewis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aaronzlewis\/status\/1291889682788253696\">nicely points out<\/a>, \u201c\u2026game engines are basically eating the world. Urban planning, architecture, automotive engineering firms, live music and events, filmmaking, etc. have all shifted a lot of their workflows\/design processes to Unreal Engine and Unity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the new electric Hummer as an example;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/10\/7\/21506572\/epic-games-unreal-engine-general-motors-gmc-hummer-ev-human-machine-interface\">the first car to have an Unreal-Engine-based interface<\/a>. The vehicle takes information from its sensors and visualizes it in 3D on the dashboard. This is spatial computing in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"HUMMER EV In Vehicle Information Graphics\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qMs5NrpUWsM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another jargon-y term you might start to hear is \u201cdigital twin,\u201d which is the idea that physical things (like a Hummer) can use its sensor data to create a software copy of itself inside a computer. This lets humans interact with simulated industrial objects as if they\u2019re computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/opengovasia.com\/hkia-develops-digital-twin\/\">famous example<\/a>&nbsp;is Hong Kong International Airport\u2019s Terminal 1 which uses a digital twin in the Unity game engine to give facilities managers a real-time view of passenger activity and equipment that might need repairs. Think of it like the terminal\u2019s 3D selfie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there\u2019s more happening in the world of game engines than I can go into, there are two engines to know: Unreal and Unity. Unreal is owned by Epic Games, the publisher who owns Fortnite, and Unity is a large publicly traded company. (Personally, I\u2019ve only ever used Unity since it\u2019s designed to be somewhat beginner-friendly.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last thing you should know about game engines is that they are going to see mind-bending levels of improvement this decade. You might not have seen the internet lose its collective mind over the demo release of the newest Unreal Engine 5, but everyone went nuts. For an approachable summary of why it\u2019s a big deal,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/estellatse\">Estella Tse<\/a>&nbsp;gave me a really&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2020\/05\/24\/epic-games-insane-video-game-graphics-demo-explained-in-simple-terms\/\">clear explanation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you have 20 minutes to spare, my classmate sent me this, and it blew my mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Now Games Can Look Like Pixar Movies - Unreal Engine 5\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/47I2N_l47mw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The takeaway is that this decade, graphics will stop looking like \u201cgraphics.\u201d The limit for how high game resolution can be is falling away, and we\u2019ll see photorealistic virtual environments that look like real life. This means you should try to see past the cartoonish aesthetic today\u2019s metaverse coverage will put in your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, imagine what that means for something like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondsports.nl\/\">Beyond Sports<\/a>, a Dutch company that uses Unity and real-time positional data taken from sports to render live events as they are happening inside virtual reality. Picture this in 10 years\u2014<em>walking around inside a game live with your friends<\/em>\u2014and now we\u2019re approaching what we might be doing in the metaverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Beyond Sports - Blocky Nickelodeon NFL Wildcard Game\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/555851612?h=c8d9a6aaed&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And here we can introduce the first part of a good definition of what the term metaverse is pointing toward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The internet has been built by web developers, the Open Metaverse is being built by game developers.<\/p>&mdash; r y a n \ud83d\udcad (@RyanCrucible) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RyanCrucible\/status\/1391851471243726851?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 10, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you start paying attention to it, you\u2019ll notice game engines everywhere, which is especially true for\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Virtual Environments<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve introduced spatial computing and game engines, we\u2019ve arrived where most mainstream coverage of the metaverse picks as its starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtual environments are the \u201cplaces\u201d we\u2019ll be logging into in tomorrow\u2019s internet. They are also a tricky thing to define. In many ways, Twitter and Discord (an online messaging platform) are already virtual environments where people meet and exchange messages and information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virtual environments I\u2019m exploring here, however, are the spatial ones built in game engines, and there are two kinds to explore. First is real-world augmented reality (think Pok\u00e9mon Go).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"HYPER-REALITY\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YJg02ivYzSs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The other is the more traditional online or purely digital virtual environments you have to sit down at a computer (or put on a VR headset) to access, though this distinction is arbitrary and already falling away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pok\u00e9mon Go is a helpful example of AR in the real world. It\u2019s a spatial game, built using Unity, that overlays 3D characters on the physical world. Does that mean we can consider Pok\u00e9mon Go to be part of the metaverse? Well yeah, sort of I guess, sure, who\u2019s to say (I guess&nbsp;<em>I\u2019m<\/em>&nbsp;saying). The current definition is slippery. We\u2019re still in the \u201cdefine your terms\u201d stage, so be careful of that in the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the future, it won\u2019t just be games\u2014the entire physical world will be like a canvas we can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/charliefink\/2018\/05\/19\/the-world-will-be-painted-with-data\/?sh=7e4173335721\">paint with data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-giphy wp-block-embed-giphy\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/flower-ar-augmented-reality-xePMkSrtKgyZO\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media4.giphy.com\/media\/xePMkSrtKgyZO\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Flower Ar GIF by Stefanie Franciotti - Find &amp; Share on GIPHY\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To make this all happen, technology companies are scrambling to build what\u2019s referred to as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/mirrorworld-ar-next-big-tech-platform\/\">the mirrorworld<\/a>&nbsp;or AR cloud. These words mean the same thing as \u201cdigital twin\u201d from earlier. Just extend the airport terminal concept to the entire Earth, and you have a tool to build virtual stuff on top of our everyday world. If you want to go deeper on this, I wrote&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/swlh\/augmented-realitys-killer-app-transforming-how-we-relate-to-physical-places-4506fae0c91c\">this article<\/a>&nbsp;exploring its impact on society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is all another way of saying the internet is spilling out of our phones and computers and merging with physical reality\u2014and it\u2019s why that Hummer might be&nbsp;<em>part<\/em>&nbsp;of the metaverse. See, for example, how Niantic (the company who publishes Pok\u00e9mon Go),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lightship.dev\/\">market their technology to developers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the metaverse won\u2019t just be random cartoon game worlds built by developers. It will also be digital replicas of very real spaces, likely the whole planet, and digital twins of industrial stuff like your car. It will eventually come to include sitting in your backyard with family members beamed in as avatars or putting on a VR headset to walk around other cities in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Day 289 &#8211; Woud you have guessed the picture drawn on this street in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SanFrancisco?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SanFrancisco<\/a>? Millions of users signed up, and lots of stuff happens there. One of these, Rec Room,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/12\/20\/rec-room-raises-145m-at-a-3-5b-valuation-for-its-user-generated-immersive-gaming-platform\/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAANoFh4VwvKVEbfB7kjpIgGI65TUsU1D3tECZdHm6KdfRLN_mhWnPskM_DUct4lLHPNSAeIt3N0DGgm04CPaBrouFq8xmh99eHMELYgFLqE9kvjM1cuL-yDfoWDlkcRC9PSqwRTiZVQZ_XKh1E0-GTxIVssYRU8eGZl29dNnZoFqE\">just raised $145 million<\/a>&nbsp;at a $3.5 billion valuation; this stuff is getting serious. Other platforms include VRChat, Altspace, Decentraland, and Somnium Space, among many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another trendy thing to do in metaverse-speak is talk about how games like Fortnite and Roblox are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/12\/1\/22811673\/fortnite-party-worlds-islands-metaverse-social-space\">fledgling metaverse experiences<\/a>\u00a0(which is true). On the surface, they come masked as games, but underneath they are spatial environments where people meet up and increasingly go to Travis Scott or Lil Nas X concerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"THE LIL NAS X FULL ROBLOX CONCERT\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f12ukZuUwWI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ultimate vision of the metaverse is that all of these experiences (Beyond Sports, Pok\u00e9mon Go, Fortnite, Roblox) will become an interconnected network of virtual environments\u2014in other words, the internet, but for experiencing stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My own journey into all this started several years ago on a platform called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sansar.com\/\">Sansar<\/a>, originally launched by the same company behind Second Life. Here, my friend Sam is showing me around a space built by one of their users; Fnatic (one of the biggest eSports teams in the world). I\u2019m in a VR headset at home in San Francisco while Sam is in Los Angeles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Fnatic Clubhouse - Sansar\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yo4rGiDR22s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What struck me is that I was \u201cwalking around\u201d with Sam&nbsp;<em>inside<\/em>&nbsp;the internet. Also, here was a retail e-commerce site to buy clothes online. Just like the world wide web must have struck CEOs in the mid-90s as an oddity that may (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/11-hilariously-wrong-internet-predictions-2013-11?r=US&amp;IR=T\">or may not<\/a>) be relevant for their business, today\u2019s CEOs are probably scratching their heads observing all this metaverse noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I will say that just as most companies today have a website, at some point most companies will have a 3D virtual environment of some kind.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With spatial computing, game engines, and virtual environments like these, we\u2019re closing the gap between experiences you have in real life (going to a concert, hanging out with friends, etc.) and experiences mediated by a computer online. This is what concepts like&nbsp;<em>Ready Player One<\/em>&nbsp;(a book by Ernest Cline adapted into a film by Steven Spielberg) are pointing toward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here we get our next helpful description of the metaverse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Make computers talk to each other, we get an Internet<br>Make virtual worlds talk to each other, we get a Metaverse<\/p>&mdash; jin (@dankvr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dankvr\/status\/1330714833419862016?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 23, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To tie it all back together&nbsp;<strong>the metaverse is the internet, but also a spatial (and often 3D), game-engine-driven collection of virtual environments.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And just as today\u2019s internet has absorbed vast portions of our economic activity, tomorrow\u2019s metaverse will consist of massive\u2026oh no, please not NFTs\u2026here it comes\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Virtual Economies (\u2026and NFTs)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my favorite statistics is that Second Life still supports an annual economy worth roughly $500 million (<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1976147\/non-fungible-tokens-boosted-second-lifes-economy\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">that number has grown during the pandemic<\/a>). The GDP of Second Life is larger than the economies of some real-world countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortnite, a game that doesn\u2019t cost a penny to play,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/3\/22417447\/fortnite-revenue-9-billion-epic-games-apple-antitrust-case\">still earned $9 billion<\/a>&nbsp;in 2018 and 2019. How? They sell in-game stuff for players to express themselves in a variety of ways including virtual clothing, dance moves, and other items. In some ways the metaverse is just a giant virtual fashion industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that sounds silly or weird, just think about how someone carefully plans what clothes to wear or what profile picture to use on LinkedIn. We care about how we express ourselves in the world. If we\u2019re going to spend an increased portion of our time online, it\u2019s not so silly to expect people will want to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hypebeast.com\/2021\/5\/virtual-gucci-bag-roblox-resale\">buy expensive Gucci bags to carry around Roblox<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So where do NFTs fit into all of this? Among other uses, NFTs offer the infrastructure to let people take custody of this virtual stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NFTs are internet-native property rights<\/p>&mdash; Fred Ehrsam (@FEhrsam) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FEhrsam\/status\/1369350597607120901?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I hate to do this, but it\u2019s worth taking one giant step back to unpack what an NFT actually is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing to note is that NFTs run on blockchains. A blockchain is really just a fancy Excel spreadsheet that keeps track of who owns what (like what a bank does to keep track of who owns what money). Today, we rely on centralized authorities like banks to keep track of how much money is in which accounts as cash is shuffled between people and businesses. The idea behind a blockchain is that everyone just gets a copy of the same spreadsheet, and the big deal\/breakthrough is that through complicated cryptography (which is&nbsp;<em>where the \u201c<\/em>crypto\u201d in cryptocurrency comes from) all those spreadsheets communicate and agree about which transactions are legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No more needing central trusted authorities. No way to hack, change, or mess around with what the spreadsheet says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NFT stands for non-fungible token. The key word is \u2018fungible\u2019 which just means you can exchange something for an equivalent version, and it will be equally valuable (bitcoin is fungible because it doesn\u2019t matter which bitcoin you have\u2014 they are all equally valuable). Non-fungible is the opposite: each item is unique. This is why we\u2019re seeing a lot of digital art being bought and sold using NFTs. NFTs use blockchains to determine who owns what.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift toward a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2021\/09\/19\/how-to-embed-trust-into-the-foundations-of-the-internet\/\">decentralized way of managing life online<\/a>&nbsp;is called Web3 (a word you\u2019ll hear more and more and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/web3-gavin-wood-interview\/\">is worth getting to know<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s use a real example. Maybe you saw the front page of&nbsp;<em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>&nbsp;this summer when an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/beeple-nft-fetches-record-breaking-69-million-in-christies-sale-11615477732\">NFT for a digital image sold for $69 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me save you $69 million and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ipfsgateway.makersplace.com\/ipfs\/QmXkxpwAHCtDXbbZHUwqtFucG1RMS6T87vi1CdvadfL7qA\">share the link<\/a>\u00a0where that image\u2019s file lives online. You can save it to your computer, and now you also own the file. Right? Well, kind of, but not in the sense everyone cares about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"552\" src=\"https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/nft-beeple-1024x552.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/nft-beeple-1024x552.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/nft-beeple-300x162.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/nft-beeple-768x414.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/nft-beeple-18x10.jpeg 18w, https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/nft-beeple.jpeg 1068w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most media coverage doesn\u2019t explain this, but most NFTs are not the thing itself; in this case the JPEG file. The NFT is the token associated\u00a0<em>with<\/em>\u00a0the metadata that points at the thing.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bafybeiamjvnjv7pb2pzfpuy5mgb6atofqxv65p34nj77mjo5vf5t3cvhfm.ipfs.dweb.link\/\">Here\u2019s the metadata\u00a0<\/a>for that NFT, by the way. There is something called an \u201con-chain NFT,\u201d but we won\u2019t go there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"136\" src=\"https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/metadata_nft-1024x136.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/metadata_nft-1024x136.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/metadata_nft-300x40.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/metadata_nft-768x102.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/metadata_nft-18x2.jpeg 18w, https:\/\/singularityumexico.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/metadata_nft.jpeg 1068w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Think of an NFT as the receipt. Here\u2019s the metadata a rich person now owns as a \u2018token\u2019 (the NFT) on the Ethereum blockchain, which points at that JPEG you and I just looked at.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason NFTs and the metaverse are conflated so often is that there\u2019s an expectation that they may power these virtual economies by acting as the infrastructure mediating the exchange of information and assets online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be clear, this is not yet a universally agreed upon idea. Second Life, Fortnite, and plenty of other platforms have been doing just fine&nbsp;<em>without<\/em>&nbsp;NFTs. But one reason NFT\/crypto is one of the noisiest places on the internet is because it\u2019s fast-paced, novel, and supported by an absurd amount of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t mean that in a negative way; but this area is the unmapped, build-it-as-we-go, unsettled frontier of life online. It happened in the browser-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/decentraland.org\/\">Decentraland<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>a spatial, game-engine-driven, virtual environment<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Metaverse Festival 2021 MultiNFT Techno Stage AfterMovie\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zPhU6teAF_s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s Friday night, and you head to the nightlife district of Decentraland (<em>a plot of land which is an NFT<\/em>). To get in you must be of age. You carry an identity token (<em>which could be an NFT<\/em>), to verify your eligibility for entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You notice someone wearing a hoodie (<em>an NFT<\/em>)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2021\/12\/22\/nike-just-acquired-an-nft-studio-to-make-digital-sneakers\/\">from RTFKT<\/a>, a virtual apparel company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.nike.com\/news\/nike-acquires-rtfkt\">recently acquired<\/a>&nbsp;by Nike. Those are expensive, I\u2019m told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s free to enter, because the event is sponsored by Kraken, who wants to be the cryptobank of the metaverse. By attending, you\u2019re issued what\u2019s called a \u201cproof of attendance protocol\u201d token, or POAP (<em>that is an NFT<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, when you sign up at Kraken, they offer a discount to those who can show, with that token, they attended the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metaverse or no metaverse,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/j.mirror.xyz\/k0yCgq0bjgn2X0AujhwjKIYk4SDBpdNayjU5_E8Wm4I\">as John Palmer explains<\/a>, NFTs mean the internet becomes a place where everyone has an inventory. Earlier we mentioned the metaverse is an interconnected collection of experiences, and if that\u2019s the case, you might want to carry your single identity, history, and inventory of assets around with you. If that sounds familiar it\u2019s basically giving users back their own cookies and personal data from big companies. I don\u2019t want to go there; but it\u2019s why a lot of people are worried about Facebook\/Meta building a centralized metaverse instead of one that is open and decentralized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve gone way down an NFT rabbit hole here, but it\u2019s worth stitching together the spatial computing\/virtual world developments with what\u2019s been happening in crypto\/Web3. When I started this research seven-ish years ago, crypto people were far away and somewhere else. Today, I now have to explore Web3 stuff too, since these areas are merging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>.&nbsp; &nbsp;.&nbsp; &nbsp;.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re still here\u2014thank you\u2014you might still be wondering: So, what? How does any of this meaningfully improve anything about the world, or even the internet? How is any of this better than what we have today? Honestly, fair point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lots of people will have points of view, and I won\u2019t advocate one perspective or another. But I do have a personal anecdote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of my MBA program, the UK government had implemented a rule that no more than six people could be together indoors. Please send in the metaverse.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My classmates will remember me as that kid who threw some weird internet house party using a platform called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.highfidelity.com\/\">High Fidelity<\/a>. It employs spatial audio, so you only hear the people clumped around you. It took some getting used to but was a reasonable way to get 150 of us, as basic 2D avatars, moving around in a shared online space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"IMG 5677\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cOoNXEOlyxw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What the metaverse enables, through dimensional space, is a way to replicate&nbsp;<em>some but not all&nbsp;<\/em>natural human behaviors, which you can\u2019t replicate in existing online spaces such as Slack, Discord, or Zoom. There are times you want the magical chaos of unplanned social interaction mediated by \u201cpersonal space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the professional world, I\u2019m endlessly fascinated by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2018\/07\/08\/inside-a-1-billion-real-estate-company-operating-entirely-in-vr\/\">this company which runs<\/a>a 60,000-person organization from inside a virtual world built in Unity. The founder of that software company tells me that when you have to actually walk your avatar from meeting to meeting, there\u2019s opportunities for chance encounters you\u2019d never get jumping from Zoom to Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.su.org\/blog\/learning-in-spatial-3d-environments?__hstc=256984660.788e6b7f4f152aa9927932de7c05950a.1656525091212.1656525091212.1656525091212.1&amp;__hssc=256984660.1.1656525091212&amp;__hsfp=4126869352\">I\u2019ve also used that same software to run learning programs<\/a>, and likewise, there are \u201cmoving around the room\u201d type learning activities I could never run using Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the metaverse might grow to become a more intuitive internet. Just like spatial computing interfaces are easier to use, websites may become like walking into physical stores, something our brains and bodies might better understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it goes without saying, we won\u2019t replace real-world experiences nor should we want to. We also won\u2019t stop using today\u2019s platforms, like video-conferencing. The metaverse is just the evolutionary next stage of the internet, and offers a new suite of communication tools that will be more helpful for some things and less for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To conclude: this is all a long-winded way of saying the metaverse is the internet. But spatial. And built with game engines. And probably NFTs.
